The Correct Way of Caring For your Eyes While Wearing Contact Lenses

The Correct Way of Caring For your Eyes While Wearing Contact Lenses

Contact Lenses are for specific wearing times. Depending on what suits your eye the best, your eye care professional may prescribe a lens planned for everyday replacement, or a lens outlined for frequent/planned substitution. So before you go to purchase some really cool looking halloween contact lenses before the holiday season, it’s best that you get your eyes checked by an ophthalmologist.

In case you’re using disposable wear (daily routine) - the contact lens is disposed of after each removal.

Frequent/ Substitution - In this scenario, the contact lens is cleaned, rinsed, and disinfected each time. It is expelled from the eye and disposed of after the suggested wearing period endorsed by the eye care professional.

It is genuinely critical to follow the substitution plan your eye care professional gave you because it tells you when you need new lenses and disposes of the old one. Taking care of your medical care professional's advice will help in keeping your eyes healthy and comfortable. So, make sure beyond any doubt you adhere to it.

When to remove your Contact Lens Immediately?

On the off chance, you face any inconvenience or issue while wearing, at that point, see closely at the lens. If the lens is in any way damaged or there is any impression or cut mark, do not put the lens back on your eye. Place the lens within the storage case and contact your eye care professional.

Regular checkup and examination done by your eye care professional is an essential part of wearing contact lenses. We would always recommend you to follow the guidelines and SOPs approved by your eye care professional.

Learn the Safest Way to Put your Contact lenses On

In the USA, it is estimated that 45 Million people wear contact lenses; hence it is essential to handle them safely. Improper care can cause you serious issues like infections, and you don't want that.

There is always a first time for everything; here are the safest ways to wear your contact lens.

  • First, it is imperative to wash your hands thoroughly and dry them well.
  • Open your contact lens case and use your fingertip to put the first contact on the tip of the finger of your non-dominant hand. For example, if you are right-handed, then hold the lens case in your right hand and use your left hand's fingertip to take the contact lens out.
  • Rinse the lens with contact lens solution as prescribed by your eye professional. Never use regular water.
  • Put the lens on the top of the index or middle finger of your dominant hand. With the convex side of the lens, it is touching the tip of the finger.
  • It is necessary to make sure the lens is not damaged and that the right side is facing up. The edges of the lens should turn up to form a bowl (a concave side). If it is not hollow, then, gently flip it. In case you find that the lens is damaged, do not use it.
  • Now you Look in the mirror and hold your upper and lower eyelids open with the hand not holding the lens. You can use various possibilities and practice them to maintain stability while putting on the lenses.
  • Look in front of you or up toward the ceiling. And place the lens in your eye gently onto the exposed white part of your eye. For the right eye, turn your head to the right and for the left eye, turn it slightly towards left.
  • Now, close your eye slowly and either roll your eye around or gently press your eyelid to settle the lens in place (Cornea where it is supposed to sit). Then the lens should feel comfortable, and you should be able to see clearly after blinking a few times. In case it is not satisfactory, gently take out the lens, rinse it, and try again.
  • Repeat the same procedure with the second lens.

Method for taking off your lenses

Here is the step by step instructions for taking your lens off safely.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly using a soft cream soap and dry them well.
  • Use the middle finger of your dominant hand to pull down your lower eyelid of one eye gently.
  • While looking up, use the index finger of that same hand to gently pull the lens down to the white part of your eye.
  • Pinch the lens with your thumb and index finger and remove it from your eye gently.
  • After you remove the lens, put it in the palm of your hand, and wet it with contact solution. Now, you must rub it gently for about 30 seconds to remove any mucus, dirt, and oil.
  • Now, rinse the lens and then place it in your contact lens case and cover it entirely with contact lenses solution recommended by your eye care professional.
  • Repeat the same procedure with the other eye.

The bottom line

Safely putting in and taking out your contact lenses is crucial for the health of your eyes.

Always be sure to wash your hands before handling your contact lenses, clean them thoroughly with contact lens solution before putting them in or after taking them out, and never sleep in them.

If you notice any redness, swelling, or discharge from your eyes, or have blurred vision or eye pain, be sure to follow up with your doctor immediately. Also, it is fundamental that you take after your eye care professional’s instructions and all labeling instructions for appropriate use of lenses and lens care products which also includes the lens case.

To keep your eyes healthy and sound, it is vital to follow the correct care instructions for your contact lenses.
